Searching the internet is imperative to success in today’s business market. This short course will teach the basics of what a search engine is, how the internet works, and how to make the most of any web search.
You Tube: How the Internet Works
SEARCHING STEPS
1. Identify the search term (both inclusion and exclusion), synonyms (if any), and keyword phrases
2. Select the search tool(s) to be used (directory, general search engine, specialty search engine)
3. Translate the search terms into search statements of the selected search engine
4. Perform search
5. Refine the search based on results
BASIC GOOGLE SEARCHING
It’s easy as long as you remember
a few, simple commands.
1.
Be specific ... because if you aren’t specific, you’ll end up with a bunch of garbage!
2.
Use quotes to search for phrases.
3.
Use the + sign to require.
4.
Use the - sign to exclude.
5.
Combine symbols as often as possible (see rule #1).
TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE SEARCHES
Avoid use of very common words (e.g., ‘computer’)
Enter search terms in lower case
Enter most important terms first - some search tools are sensitive to word order
Be keyword prepared - spelling variations, synonyms, broader and narrower terms
Repeat the search by varying search terms and their combinations; try this on different search tools
